After working for 29 hours on a full color piece for the Robots & Fairy Tales exhibit at SlushBox Gallery I needed to cleanse my mental palette. To do this I wanted to draw with ink and try to complete a piece in one sitting; something I rarely do. After getting the black work done and adding the white highlights, I decided to add a spark of the macabre that Edgar Allan Poe is known for and colored the background red, dripping at the bottom.

The original drawing is available in my online shop and measures 5"x7" matted to 8"x10".

Sally Nightmare Before Christmas Art

Like so many other people who make art in my genre, the works of Tim Burton have been a large influence in my own creations. This being the 20th anniversary year of The Nightmare Before Christmas, I've been really wanting to make an homage piece for the film. Finally, in the last month of 2013, I slipped one in.



I needed to knock this out in one day, due to Christmas commissions needing to be completed, so I cranked away on this for about 11 hours straight and completed it on schedule. The finished piece is 6"x12" colored pencil and acrylic on wood. Let me know if you think I should do more "Nightmare" art!

The Walking Dead Gets New Hero

Commissions are not like other types of art. There are certain guidelines, even when the collector says "Do whatever you want", the piece already has an owner so I feel it should fit the collector's personality and taste. Sometimes a commission is presented to me and I know right away it will be a really fun project. Take for example this Walking Dead cover illustration. The collector told me he had a blank issue #109 and asked if I would put some original art on it. He said it would be a gift for his dad who is a big Rick Grimes fan, so he wanted his dad as Sheriff Grimes fighting off some zombies. I had fun every step of the way on this one. 12 Mystery Monsters on June 28th

The time is near. On June 28th, 2013 I am releasing a dozen mystery monsters with madness on their minds. Each original monster is full-colored pencil on 2.5"x3.5" (baseball card size) illustration board and come in an archival acrylic frame. Each colored monster comes with an original blue sketch of a different monster, so you get two unique original drawings together at one time. The blue sketches are being randomly matched with the colored monsters, then packaged up and sealed. After that, no one will know which monsters are in which pack. You will receive a randomly pulled package, making them mystery monsters! They will be priced at just $75 for two drawings (one colored and framed and one blue sketch on bristol), two monster pin back buttons, and a bookmark! No limit per person, but no advance orders or holds are being accepted this time. Make sure you mark your calenders for June 28th!

The video game fanatic in me has been itching to be part of an art exhibit focused on the same and the time has finally come. I have created two new pieces in the new media-combo I've been pursuing lately. Each piece is colored pencil and acrylic paint on wood and will be debuted by FNDTN Gallery on opening night.

"PRESS START" is a group show featuring artwork by local (Maryland area) and national artists inspired by video games. The show will run from Friday, May 10th, to Saturday, May 25th, with an opening reception for the event on May 10th at 7PM.

Foomi Sea Monster

 

This Sea Monster is the first Kidrobot Foomi I've had the pleasure of customizing. I was given the request of creating a multi-eyed sea creature on the Foomi figure. He stands a little over four inches tall and was painted with acrylics. Red Leopard Saber Tooth Dunny

Since February 2009, every custom toy I have made has either been a blind-Box (Beast Buddies), a commissioned piece, or for a particular exhibit. For the first time in over three years, I am releasing this single custom Dunny available July 9th, 2012 at 5pm EST through my Etsy shop.

The Dunny will come as seen in the photo, with it's own "Color Chemist" box, three pin-back buttons, and a sticker. This is the only piece I plan to make under these circumstances for a while since I still have commissions and exhibits on my plate. I had actually started this piece last year and put it on the back burner. In order to clean up some unfinished projects, I got up extra early a few days in a row and got this piece finished.

Pajama Painting Progression

Here we go with another painting progression of a piece for my "Inside Out" exhibit with Aaron Jasinski at Art Whino. Like the other three I've completed so far for this exhibit, this one is 11"x14", acrylic on gessoed basswood. The story here is the proverbial dream some folks have about coming to school in pajamas. If you've had the dream yourself, you know how troubling it can be. If you haven't had it, I'm sure you can image the awkward feelings a dream like that can produce.

I approached this piece "coloring book style" where I drew it all out directly on the gesso and painted everything piece by piece. This process is more tedious than painting the whole background, establishing an under-painting for the subject and foreground, and gradually layering details, but since I have very specific ideas for this show, I want to make sure each piece comes through exactly as planned.

The chalkboard has a list of things I really got in trouble for during my years in school. If you can't read the list you will just have to come to the opening at Art Whino on June 23rd to see the painting in person.

Steampunk Sheriff Dunny

For this commission I was asked to create anything I wanted as long at it was on the Chuckboy Cyborg Dunny platform. I had only worked on this platform once before when I made the seafaring Scuba Dunny. A month ago I beat the PS3 game Rage and have since been wanting to do a steampunk themed custom. When I was striping and priming the Chuckboy cyborg it hit me that this was the perfect platform to take in a steampunk direction. I had a blast creating this little sci-fi western sheriff and hope to do more in this theme soon.

Coffee Girl in Progress

Although I closed my series of "Coffee Girls", I did agree to accept a commission for one. It will be an 8"x10" colored pencil piece. Here is the initial idea sketched out in blue drawing pencil.

I went to my local Hobby Lobby to get some illustration board for this piece. It was my first time in the Saint Augustine store. The family is still getting settled in to our new place and finding our way around. When I lived in Gainesville, FL I made frequent trips to St Augustine, but usually just hung around St. George Street and then over to Villano Beach. Now that I live here I will need to figure out where to purchase all of my art supplies. I must admit, I will always have a very large place in my heart for Colorado, but it sure is nice to cruise over to the beach whenever I want. It's only about 15 minutes away.

This is a pair of custom Android figures I painted for a client. I was given a very open theme, and only asked that one be red and one green. I figured that I should focus on the colors themselves, and make a pair of bots that really compliment each other.
