Skeleton Boy with Eggs

I just finished this painting for a collector who requested a unique version of the "Skeleton with Bird" piece I made for the "It's ALIVE!!!" exhibit at Rendition Gallery. It's has been painted on pine, cut from the same board that I salvaged from a home improvement project. (My dad and I turned a window into a door in my house, the pine was for exterior trim.) I've actually been enjoying painting on the wood so much that I will most likely purchase more when I run out of what I have.

To prep the wood I cut a piece in the desired length. The width of the board is 3.5". This painting measures 6" top to bottom. I then use 150 grit sand paper to round the corners and soften the edges by hand. The surface to be painted gets a coat of gesso which dries for twenty-four hours, then a second coat to dry another twenty-four. After painting the piece with acrylics I gave it two coats of archival gloss varnish.

Two New Monsters

As promised, I have been concentrating on 2D pieces again and only working on custom toys when commissioned to do so. I've also been trying to cut back on my time with the Playstation 3 at night, as it was starting to suck up my creativity.

I recently was asked to give a presentation of my art to a local elementary school. They wanted me to demonstrate a painting. With a limited time schedule, I was only able to lay down some basics. I started the piece you see below and after the presentation, took it back to the studio and finished up.

A couple of days later I wanted to get another monster out of my head so I challenged myself to do something I don't think I've ever done; Start and finish a painting in one session. Even though the panel I chose to work on was only 3.75"x3.75", completing any type of project in a single sitting is very difficult for me. However, despite the challenge, I overcame and created the piece you see below.

Both of these guys are sold, but I have another monster painting in progress. It's a piece that I am trying to work on between commissions so it may be a while before I get it finished but when I do, I will post it on this blog.

Untitled Pencil Drawing

After working on commissioned pieces throughout the day, I sometimes take a drawing board into the living room in the evenings. You see, I'm one of those people who has a lot of trouble just sitting and watching TV. If I'm not doing something with my hands I will fidget. While my wife is watching a program usually consisting of singing, dancing, or house hunting, I with tool away on a drawing so we can still chat but I won't go crazy staring at the plasma. The drawing you see here is one that was created in the way I have described above.

I started this drawing while hanging out at The Gallery Underground on a 1st Friday, then finished it up on 3rd Friday also during a Gallery Underground exhibit. I was recently at the zoo with my wife and two kids and picked up some inspiration from the plethora of animals. Originally this was intended to just be an ink drawing but part of the way into inking it I had the idea to add a little watercolor to spice it up. This piece is available. New Daily Sketch Blog

I was inspired by my friend and studio mate, Oscar Woodruff, to start a daily sketch blog. Even though I paint or draw every day already, I tend to get caught up in the work-side of art and don't put aside enough time to just draw for the sake of drawing. Day three on this new painting. This photo shows about 4 hours of work since the last photo. Basically I began darkening and lightening various areas so I can begin to see where my contrasts need to be and what colors will help bring them out. I chose to only work on the old turtle man first and not do anything to the girl on the right. I find that when I have too much partially finished work on the same piece, I have a hard time concentrating on any certain area. My eyes are all over the painting and I get overwhelmed trying to focus on what needs to get done. I will continue working the turtle until I am fairly clear on how he will look when finished, then I will work on the girl, occasionally going back to the turtle to compliment how the girl begins to turn out, then back to the girl. I want both characters to work with each other, of course, in regards to lighting, colors, and textures (illusions of texture, not actual). I will be working on this piece tomorrow night at the open house at Gallery Underground in Ft Collins, CO. Come by from 5-9 to watch, if you want.
