I've actually done something two days in a row besides drink coffee! Here's the second One-A-Minute sketch; the series that was started yesterday. What's that? I set a timer for 10-20 minutes depending on my schedule for that day, and draw with no plan until the timer goes off. YOU get these drawings for just ONE DOLLAR per minute. This little fishy was drawn on a 15 minute timer so he's just fifteen bucks plus $2.99 to ship it and I'll throw in a sticker or two so it will be worth the postage. One-A-Minute Sketch

What is this? Well, it's a sketch of course, but it's also a project-slash-challenge and a win for you. Pencil Sketch 1 and 2

How has your 2017 started out? Did you make any resolutions? Have you stuck to them? Please comment and let me know how the year is starting out for you. I've made quite a few resolutions in my personal life. One is to remember that my health and family are more important than anything else. Over the past few years I've neglected my health, allowing stress and "busy work" to rule my life. This year, while resolving to create even more art than last year, I commit to doing so in a responsible manner. Let's see if I can walk that tightrope!

Sally Nightmare Before Christmas Art

Like so many other people who make art in my genre, the works of Tim Burton have been a large influence in my own creations. This being the 20th anniversary year of The Nightmare Before Christmas, I've been really wanting to make an homage piece for the film. Finally, in the last month of 2013, I slipped one in.



I needed to knock this out in one day, due to Christmas commissions needing to be completed, so I cranked away on this for about 11 hours straight and completed it on schedule. The finished piece is 6"x12" colored pencil and acrylic on wood. Let me know if you think I should do more "Nightmare" art!

Octopus Hug

I've just finished my second illustration on mid-tone paper and I am really liking this substrate. This one is a 5"x7" ink and pencil drawing on grey paper. I can't get enough of the octopus theme. Seems that my thumb is healing up, slowly but surely, so back to the drawing table!

Blue Sketches

I've been carrying a small sketchbook around with me lately. I don't leave the house much during the day since I work from home in my studio, but I've had family in town and we've been out and about so I've been squeezing in time to do some sketching on the go. These two guys are now living in that sketchbook. The paper is odd, measuring about 4.5"x6.75" with two round corners. If you are interested in them I will mat them to a 5"x7" so they can be framed. 12 Mystery Monsters on June 28th

The time is near. On June 28th, 2013 I am releasing a dozen mystery monsters with madness on their minds. Each original monster is full-colored pencil on 2.5"x3.5" (baseball card size) illustration board and come in an archival acrylic frame. Each colored monster comes with an original blue sketch of a different monster, so you get two unique original drawings together at one time. The blue sketches are being randomly matched with the colored monsters, then packaged up and sealed. After that, no one will know which monsters are in which pack. You will receive a randomly pulled package, making them mystery monsters! They will be priced at just $75 for two drawings (one colored and framed and one blue sketch on bristol), two monster pin back buttons, and a bookmark! No limit per person, but no advance orders or holds are being accepted this time. Make sure you mark your calenders for June 28th!

These pieces remain in the nautical theme I've been exploring, and I've gone both above and below the ocean's surface to broaden the scope of sea-themes.

December's new releases are now up in the Etsy shop. To make things a little different than last month, I've also made the blue pencil sketches available for each original colored piece. Time Lapse Octopus Drawing

Warriors of the Wind

Available November 1st, 2012 - Four new colored pencil illustrations on cradled basswood. Each is 5"x7"x1.5" deep. They will be available through my Etsy Shop.

The release of these four pieces marks the first in a new way I will be sharing art with you. Rather than offering new work sporadically over time, I will now be presenting fresh pieces on the 1st day of each month.

"Warriors of the Wind" are whimsical portrayals of natives, inspired by various cultures that have influenced my life including Apache, Maya, and Tlingit. From the top left, the titles are "Chief Starhunter", "Rose of the Moon", "Sun Prince", and "Princess Prophetess".

My daughter said I should draw a pony today. I told her I would if I could do it my own way. We argued a while about how it should look like her "My Little Pony" but I settled it by teaching her to use tracing paper to draw her own pony. Here's mine.

Daily Drawing 31

Today as I was rummaging through my studio for a piece of bristol or watercolor paper to do today's daily drawing on, I realized I had run out and started scavenging for a substrate. I came across some pieces of wood I had actually set aside since they had knots in them. I didn't think I would use them for anything, but I had sanded them just in case. Here's the case. The drawing was done in ball point pen and colored pencil. The finished piece will be varnished tomorrow.

Caffeine Illustration in Progress

It was so much fun sharing the progress of my last painting with you here on the blog I thought I'd do it again with this colored pencil illustration. This piece is one that I am doing for the "Caffeine" exhibit at Rendition. The illustration board I am working on measures 11"x14". I began by drawing out the girl with her to-go cup of coffee, tea, hot cocoa, or whatever. The next phase was writing out a list of coffee-related words and printing them from the computer. The next step was to trace them all with pencil and tracing paper, and do a reverse rubbing on the illustration board so the font would be how I wanted.

Once this tedious part was over I moved on to color. Worried about the light pencil rub fading as I worked, I started by coloring the lettering first. In this photo there is already about 7 hours of color work. This one is going to be a time monster!

Now with the background finished I am able to move on to working with the main form in the piece which is the girl holding her to-go cup of coffee. This is where the artistic challenge comes in. Since the background is so colorful, I have to make sure that she does not get washed into a psychedelic ocean of confusion. I have a color scheme planned out for her, but I won't mention it here because I want the freedom to adapt or manipulate the plan if the piece needs me to do so.

Now the roses in her hair are finished, and the hair is getting all colored up. I'm down to crunch-time now and this piece really needs to be finished today, which means all the unfinished work you see here needs to be completed in one sitting. That will probably be about 10-12 hours of work. I better get back to it.
