Be it football or the zoo, Jacksonville, Florida has a connection to jaguars. This piece is inspired by that connection, as well as my love for all creatures that roam this earth.

This piece is intended to remind us of the beauty that exists on our planet, and that we as humans must remember our role as we share this earth with other living creatures. We are all God's creation, and as appointed caretakers, humans have a responsibility that many of us neglect.

Save a Manatee with Bryan Collins Art

Manatees are a very threatened creature, and when I heard about the new Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Program at the Jacksonville Zoo, I was inspired to contribute in some way. The Gleeful Gator finished art

 

The Gleeful Gator is the newest work to come out of Studio Collins. This piece was somewhat experimental, as I used different methods to plan and process the art. The first sketch was drawn much smaller in my sketchbook with a normal #2 pencil. I used a projector to transfer it to an 11x14 canvas, but after spending a couple of hours painting, I put the canvas aside and decided to switch to colored pencil, so I started over with an 11x14 piece of bristol. I spent another hour coloring that, then decided that the juxtaposition would frame better on 11x17, so I started all over with the projector on a new piece of larger bristol and created the final piece you see here.

The sky, water, and bed area below were done in shapes and forms borrowed from my earlier Coffee Girls series, while the flamingo and alligator were colored in ways I've been using more recently. All said and done, The Gleeful Gator has been received very well by you, my collectors, so I plan on creating more animals in similar styles, so if there's a particular animal you'd like to discuss for commission, send an email to bryancollinsart@gmail.com and I'll answer as soon as I can.

Climber Bear 11"x14" Acrylic Painting

Here's a strange and interesting story for you!

Commissions are the most rewarding when the client says "do whatever you want", and you know they really mean it. Of course, one should still consider the client's personality, interests, location where the painting will be displayed, and other factors. This is one of the afore mentioned situations where I was given total freedom to create any type of painting I wanted, and it really panned out.

After weeks of thought, I decided to make this Climber Bear painting. The client spent some time living in Colorado and now resides in Florida where he's part owner of a rock climbing gym. The prevalence of bears in both states, and the climbing connection to Colorado and the gym, and his overall vibe led me toward this idea.

Here's the strange part. When I delivered the painting to the client, his reaction was hard to read at first. He seemed to love the art, but there was something else in his face that I couldn't' decipher. He struggled for words, then said, "Want to know what's crazy? My Native American spirit animal is a bear, and my wife and I were just saying if we have a son we want to name him Bear!" He was blown away that I chose an animal that was so important to his family. After sleepless nights hoping he would like the art, I rested easily, knowing he would treasure the painting.

Wow! I love it when things like this happen, certainly because they don't happen too often, but because it means the client gets affirmation of the creative process, he gets a painting with a unique story, and I get to move forward in my artistic journey with hope and new faith.

Hammerhead Shark Mixed Media Illustration

You probably already know that one of my favorite art themes is nautical or sea life. Strangely enough I have only made a couple of shark drawings, and with a few upcoming animal-themed events I plan on exhibiting at, it seemed a great time to add a shark to the collection of available artwork. One of my personal favorites is the hammerhead shark, due to it's strange and unique head shape.

Did you know that hammerhead sharks use that wide head to trap stingrays to the ocean floor so they can eat them? Hammerheads have very few predators, but other sharks and humans are the majority. Horrifically, over a 100 million sharks are killed each year. I myself am a fisherman and seafood lover, and believe both can be enjoyed responsibly.

Finally back online! After Hurricane Irma swept through Florida we were left without power, then without internet for almost two weeks. Panda Oar Fisherman

I set out to draw a panda. Just a simple panda. I placed a hat on his head because I thought it would help him feel more civilized. Before we knew it, he had asked for an oar because he wanted to start a commercial fishing business and was ready to follow the tide.
