Chin Up Ink Drawing

This is the first piece I tried to tackle after picking up a set of Sakura Pigma Micron Pens and I put it aside for a while, knowing that once I had more practice with the pens I'd want to go back and work on it again. She's complete now and I am hooked on these pens. The tips don't clog or dry out like some other pens I've used, and the ink is archival and very black. Even the 005 size is consistently smooth.

The Walking Dead Gets New Hero

Commissions are not like other types of art. There are certain guidelines, even when the collector says "Do whatever you want", the piece already has an owner so I feel it should fit the collector's personality and taste. Sometimes a commission is presented to me and I know right away it will be a really fun project. Take for example this Walking Dead cover illustration. The collector told me he had a blank issue #109 and asked if I would put some original art on it. He said it would be a gift for his dad who is a big Rick Grimes fan, so he wanted his dad as Sheriff Grimes fighting off some zombies. I had fun every step of the way on this one. Mid Tone Paper Drawings

I think this mid-toned paper has become my new addiction. It's actually pulled me in so much that I'm getting distracted from commissions, so I will do my best to control the urges. I am not straying from my established style of psychedelic, high energy color, just exploring my roots of ink and using the mid toned paper to study contrast and mood. I'm finding that these ink drawings are giving me a new perspective about how to approach my colorful work.

The Day of the Dead piece revealed some unexpected challenges as I was inking the nose, lips, and cheeks. The decorative makeup needed to have its own contrast, while still portraying the natural form of that part of the face. The challenge was fun and I'm sure I will do more Dia de los Muertos work in the future.

12 Mystery Monsters on June 28th

The time is near. On June 28th, 2013 I am releasing a dozen mystery monsters with madness on their minds. Each original monster is full-colored pencil on 2.5"x3.5" (baseball card size) illustration board and come in an archival acrylic frame. Each colored monster comes with an original blue sketch of a different monster, so you get two unique original drawings together at one time. The blue sketches are being randomly matched with the colored monsters, then packaged up and sealed. After that, no one will know which monsters are in which pack. You will receive a randomly pulled package, making them mystery monsters! They will be priced at just $75 for two drawings (one colored and framed and one blue sketch on bristol), two monster pin back buttons, and a bookmark! No limit per person, but no advance orders or holds are being accepted this time. Make sure you mark your calenders for June 28th!

The video game fanatic in me has been itching to be part of an art exhibit focused on the same and the time has finally come. I have created two new pieces in the new media-combo I've been pursuing lately. Each piece is colored pencil and acrylic paint on wood and will be debuted by FNDTN Gallery on opening night.

"PRESS START" is a group show featuring artwork by local (Maryland area) and national artists inspired by video games. The show will run from Friday, May 10th, to Saturday, May 25th, with an opening reception for the event on May 10th at 7PM.

Warriors of the Wind

Available November 1st, 2012 - Four new colored pencil illustrations on cradled basswood. Each is 5"x7"x1.5" deep. They will be available through my Etsy Shop.

The release of these four pieces marks the first in a new way I will be sharing art with you. Rather than offering new work sporadically over time, I will now be presenting fresh pieces on the 1st day of each month.

"Warriors of the Wind" are whimsical portrayals of natives, inspired by various cultures that have influenced my life including Apache, Maya, and Tlingit. From the top left, the titles are "Chief Starhunter", "Rose of the Moon", "Sun Prince", and "Princess Prophetess".

Coffee Girl in Progress

Although I closed my series of "Coffee Girls", I did agree to accept a commission for one. It will be an 8"x10" colored pencil piece. Here is the initial idea sketched out in blue drawing pencil.

I went to my local Hobby Lobby to get some illustration board for this piece. It was my first time in the Saint Augustine store. The family is still getting settled in to our new place and finding our way around. When I lived in Gainesville, FL I made frequent trips to St Augustine, but usually just hung around St. George Street and then over to Villano Beach. Now that I live here I will need to figure out where to purchase all of my art supplies. I must admit, I will always have a very large place in my heart for Colorado, but it sure is nice to cruise over to the beach whenever I want. It's only about 15 minutes away.
