July Challenge 11, 12, 13

Challenges are one of the driving forces behind every artist. Whether it's mastering the medium, developing a new technique, or just meeting deadlines, the hurdles give us a reason to push forward in the race. This July Art Challenge pushed my boundaries by forcing me to draw characters I would have never drawn on my own. What pushes you? What challenges are you facing? What are you doing to overcome them?

Each of these 5"x7" drawings was created with Pigma Micron pens and watercolor on Strathmore mixed media paper. Each is sold.

The Walking Dead Gets New Hero

Commissions are not like other types of art. There are certain guidelines, even when the collector says "Do whatever you want", the piece already has an owner so I feel it should fit the collector's personality and taste. Sometimes a commission is presented to me and I know right away it will be a really fun project. Take for example this Walking Dead cover illustration. The collector told me he had a blank issue #109 and asked if I would put some original art on it. He said it would be a gift for his dad who is a big Rick Grimes fan, so he wanted his dad as Sheriff Grimes fighting off some zombies. I had fun every step of the way on this one. DC Comics Marker Sketches

While showing art at the Tampa Bay Comic Convention a couple weeks ago I sketched out the top drawing above of Batman. The collector who ended up acquiring the drawing commissioned the Catwoman and Nightwing drawings shown here as well. Each one is 5"x7" Sharpie marker on bristol. I grew up looking at comic books and trying to learn from the artwork in them.
