Manatees are a very threatened creature, and when I heard about the new Manatee Rescue and Rehabilitation Program at the Jacksonville Zoo, I was inspired to contribute in some way. Black House Spider Ink Drawing

 

In the continuing preparation for this year's National Reptile Breeders' Expo in Daytona, Florida, I've created this Black House Spider drawing. The original work is 4"x6" ink on paper, and is available now. I'm not requiring anyone to wait for the show in August, because if the originals for this show sell out online, I will offer prints of them at the Expo. The requirement of this show state that the only art allowed must feature reptiles, arachnids, and amphibians (it's really a reptile convention), so I'm stocking up as fast as I can. There are some original works that I'm saving to reveal at the Expo, but this Black House Spider is ready for a home today. Check it out HERE.

Black Moor Goldfish Ink Drawing

 

It's no secret that artists love nautical themes, and I'm no exception. As someone who's always been fascinated by the world in the water, finned friends are a common theme in my art. When I decided to pull the plug about half way through Inktober 2018 I first considered it a failure. The challenge was to create a new original black and white piece of art each day for the thirty-one days of October. I was trucking right along for the first two weeks but with commissioned pieces waiting to be made I found myself in a state of guilt each time I worked on Inktober. Which was worse? Guilt over not finishing the Inktober challenge or guilt over not finishing commissions that people were waiting to receive? Obviously it's the later, since the former only punishes me. Making others wait while I chase a personal goal seemed unfair. Shortly afterwards I realized that cutting Inktober short was only a failure if I chose to see it that way. To see it as a success only required looking back at the pieces I did complete. None of these would exist if I had never started the challenge in the first place. Some of these have even birthed ideas for larger colored works.

As always, I appreciate everything I learned in those two weeks of ink drawing. No creative endeavor is a failure if you can accept what you gained in knowledge and experience. To see if these originals are available, click HERE to visit my Etsy shop.

Mulan Drawing, July Challenge 28

When it comes to art and design, I've always been inspired by Asian culture. I love the thought that goes into balancing nature and progress. On this July 2017 Challenge piece I was given two options by the person commissioning the piece. She said she wanted Belle or Mulan and I was leaning toward Mulan right away. Since this was a black and white challenge, I also felt that I would need color to properly represent Belle, so I locked down my decision and created this piece in 5"x7" size on Strathmore Mixed Media Paper with Pigma Micron Pens and Windsor and Newton Watercolor. Was there ever a time in your life that you pretended you could marry a cartoon character? For me that fantasy included becoming a merman and living under the sea with Ariel. As part of Disney Week in my 2017 July Art Challenge, I was asked to draw Ariel in the same black and white theme I had going that month. This weekend I am going to Disney World with my family. Two of my three kids have never been, and one ride I'll be sure to take them on is the Haunted Mansion. I remember going there as a teenager and thinking that if given the opportunity, I could live in that mansion full time. I imagined making my house look like a cross between the Disney Haunted Mansion and the mansion from Edward Scissorhands. The problem with this currently is that we live in Florida and painting a house black or dark gray is asking for an $800 electric bill each month to keep it cool. Not to mention my retired neighbors are all suspicious of why I don't "leave" for work during the week already. If I worked from home in a black house with strange landscaping and creepy music drifting out of the open windows in the fall I think we would be bombarded on Halloween and avoided like the plague the rest of the year. Of course, it might drive property taxes down...

Davy Jones was a very memorable character from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. The CGI was so incredible that I just couldn't take my eyes off of him as the tentacles squirmed all over his face. Donald Duck was always one of my favorite core Disney characters because I loved watching him come unraveled. He's so easily stressed out and has a short fuse and I can certainly relate to what that's like. This piece was created by commission from the Disney week of my July Art Challenge (2017). July Art Challenge 22 and 25

The final week of the July Art Challenge was themed on Disney. While I expected to get seven different requests for princesses, I was surprised to see the array of characters that you guys asked for. As noted in the title of this post, I am sharing piece 22 and skipping forward to 25 since they are Pluto and Baby Pluto. July Art Challenge 21

Rounding out Video Game Week in my July Art Challenge is Garrus from Mass Effect. He was certainly one of the most challenging of Video Game Week, with Pharah a close tie. The purpose of this July project was to push myself to create a drawing every day that someone else chose for me to do. Sometimes we just want to create from what we know and I wanted to move beyond that. Drawing in our comfort zone is not always taking the easy road, but certainly the familiar one. This challenge brought me out of that zone and was a great confidence builder.

The second week of my 2017 July Art Challenge was themed on comic books. One of the collectors who joined in on the challenge asked if Sailor Saturn counted for comics since there are graphic novels based on the cartoon series. Innsmouth Denizen 2

 

Ever since seeing Creature From The Black Lagoon I've enjoyed drawing hybrid fish-men but after reading The Shadow Over Innsmouth by H.P. Lovecraft this affinity was taken to a new level. Picturing the citizens of Innsmouth lurking down cobblestone streets and peering out of windows with their scaly skin and webbed fingers gave me all new inspiration to illustrate these strange beings.
