Mystery Drawings Have Commenced

People love a good surprise, myself included, and prove they do by the success of blind-boxed mini figures such as the Beast Buddies. Because of this, I thought it would be fun to start making Mystery Drawings. These are 5"x7" graphite illustrations that I make when you order them. You don't know what you will get, and at first, neither do I! These are all spontaneous pieces. For a limited time I am offering these Mystery Drawing for just $25 at either BigCartel or Esty.

All of the images are "clicky" and will take you to the BigCartel listing.

Pre-release of my 1st book

I am extremely excited to officially announce the pre-release of my first book, Proof of Faith - the art and emprise of Bryan A. Collins. This book features around 100 paintings and illustrations from 2007-2010, and a couple of pieces from my teen years. A few of my custom toys are also featured. Accompanying the artwork is a candid and abbreviated story of how I first became interested in art, how creativity got me through my troubled teen years, paved my way to touring nationally with a signed band, and how I now maintain a life as a full-time working artist. The book is written in a personal, me-to-you fashion, and answers many of the questions I am frequently asked about a variety of topics related to art. There is also a great deal of advice for aspiring artists, as well as motivational support for working artists.

PRE-ORDERS come with an exclusive, signed and numbered limited edition print. The number of prints in the edition will be determined by how many pre-orders are made. Pre-orders can be signed and personalized at your request. Pre-ordering is available for a limited time only. Books are scheduled to ship in late March 2011.

Daddy Didn't Raise No Girly Girl

It has been a very long time since I sat down with my Prismacolors and dove into an illustration. I almost forgot how much I love the smell of freshly sharpened pencils. It should be no surprise that I would draw up a cowgirl, considering I just saw the film True Grit and that the band I play drums for is moving toward a western-style rock. Furthermore, I learned how to drive at 8-years-old on my dad's tractor and was taught to shoot pistols and shotguns at about the same age. I come from a long line of hunters (especially being of Apache decent) and was taught that nothing good in life comes easy. This is a concept we have pushed aside with the advancements of technology and the trend of looking to the government for handouts, taken from people who DO work hard. No one likes to think of the possibility that within a matter of moments, any given natural or man-made disaster could turn this planet back into a place where only the strong survive. Government and technology mean nothing to the distorted face of chaos. This illustration is of a lady whose "daddy didn't raise no girly girl".

Octopus Dunny in Progress

I am currently working on a series of pieces for a collector, all based on his diving adventures in Thailand. There will be 5 Dunnys: An octopus, a lionfish, trigger fish, sea turtle, and diver. There will also be an 8" Munny customized as a whale shark. The above photo is the work in progress on the octopus. I will try to keep posting updates on the whole collection as I am working on them. As usual, your comments are welcomed. Thanks for checking it out.

Boy at Playground Sketch

I hang out at a lot of playgrounds now that I am a father of two. To be honest, I don't think I ever really stopped visiting the playground. Who doesn't love to fly forward and back on the swings or cram their adult-sized body through a kid-sized tunnel slide? Anyhow, due to more frequent visits I am becoming inspired by the parks and how it feels sometimes to be too grown up. The kid in this drawing realizes he's not having as much fun as he used to, because now he's expected to be "mature". He's supposed to start thinking about how to make money and give it to the government so he can have health insurance. No more trips to outer space. Something should be done about this.

When I Feel I'm Gone

This is the ORIGINAL acrylic painting, "When I Feel I'm Gone", created for my 'Proof of Faith' exhibit at Art Whino in Washington DC. For me, this piece is about internal struggles with loneliness in a society filled with 'dead-minded TV heads' who live in a robotic fashion. The girl in the stained white dress just wishes someone could connect with her soul, yet she is failed again and again. The bold colors hint that there is hope in her situation, and that no matter what predicament she is in, tomorrow may bring healing.

The painting is 12"x12" acrylic on canvas and is framed as seen in the photos. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have regarding this painting. I am always glad to discuss the work with anyone.

Tiny Little ACEO Drawings

A while back I decided to personally challenge myself with a 'daily drawing' blog. I had seen other artists doing it either within groups challenging each other or just going solo. Fellow Gallery Underground studio mates Oscar Woodruff and Rolfe Bautista were two of them. After just a few short days I realized I would not be able to produce a finished original drawing each day without significantly increasing the amount of time it takes me to complete commissions and custom requests. As some of you know, I create constantly but not quickly. I ended the daily drawing blog and went back to completely focusing on commissions and shows.

The urge to create something without pressure is always in me. A great deal of what I am painting and drawing right now is specifically for someone or for an exhibit, so I sometimes miss drawing with no purpose other than the act of drawing. So, since the daily drawing thing is too large to tackle at the moment, I decided to occasionally make original ACEOs (Art Cards Editions and Originals). They measure 2.5"x3.5" which is standard trading card size. I am numbering them on the back for archiving purposes. They are available through Etsy at www.bryancollins.etsy.com for around $15 each.

These will come out sporadically, but I'd like to try to produce at least one per week. Since they are taking me around two hours to finish, I can't sacrifice that much time too often. They will have no connecting theme, just whatever I'm inspired to make at the moment I make it.

Feel free to send a message if you have any questions about anything. Doesn't even have to be art related. I'm a wealth of strange information.

New prints, process

I am glad to finally release some new prints, and with a new process as well. I have been experimenting with many print processes over the past year, and working hard to come up with the highest quality prints at the lowest cost. This effort means that I can now offer limited editions at the lowest prices possible. Wisdom (5x7) is just $12 and As You Know (8x10) is $25.

These prints have been released in an edition of just 25 each. Hopefully they will sell out quick at these prices so you will get a higher, quicker return on your investment.

Each print is made with the highest quality HP inks from huge files, and printed under maximum dpi settings. Instead of photo paper, these are on bright white 110lb premium cardstock. A white border provides easy matting without losing any of the print area under a mat or frame. Signed and numbered at the bottom in the white area.

Prints arrive to you in a removable polypropylene sleeve and braced flat. I never roll prints. Please message me if you have any questions!

Purchase at
www.bryancollins.etsy.com or www.bryandrinkscoffee.com in the SHOP. I accept credit cards through Paypal. ~Bryan
