Outside vs Inside. We experience things quite differently depending on if we are observing them or a part of them. Viewing a challenge, such as attending college or approaching an attractive person, can seem like a big, intimidating thing. By the time you are in your 2nd or 3rd year of college or have become good friends with that good looking person, the previously daunting situation no longer feels so menacing.

Further, there are some who find solace in living as outsiders and prefer to rarely engage in socially inclusive circumstances. Punk rockers, anarchists, artists, musicians, scientists, mathematicians, bookworms, and video gamers are just a few examples of chosen lives and identities that comfort those who prefer the outsider lifestyle. This exhibit seeks to tell some of these stories in the whimsical fashion that Aaron Jasinski and Bryan Collins are known for.

Pajama Painting Progression

Here we go with another painting progression of a piece for my "Inside Out" exhibit with Aaron Jasinski at Art Whino. Like the other three I've completed so far for this exhibit, this one is 11"x14", acrylic on gessoed basswood. The story here is the proverbial dream some folks have about coming to school in pajamas. If you've had the dream yourself, you know how troubling it can be. If you haven't had it, I'm sure you can image the awkward feelings a dream like that can produce.

I approached this piece "coloring book style" where I drew it all out directly on the gesso and painted everything piece by piece. This process is more tedious than painting the whole background, establishing an under-painting for the subject and foreground, and gradually layering details, but since I have very specific ideas for this show, I want to make sure each piece comes through exactly as planned.

The chalkboard has a list of things I really got in trouble for during my years in school. If you can't read the list you will just have to come to the opening at Art Whino on June 23rd to see the painting in person.

Inked in Pink painting progression

Here we go with the second painting for the upcoming "Outside In" exhibit at Art Whino. This one is being called "Inked in Pink", as she will have pink tattoos covering her arms. The cherry blossoms and airplanes are being painted pink as well.

For these "Outside In" paintings I am using a technique different than my usual one where I paint the entire background first. Since I am doing all of these pieces on gessoed basswood, I am making somewhat detailed pencil drawings on the wood first and painting over top of the drawings. So far I am pleased with this process as it allows me to really plan out a piece in advance of attacking it.

This process is also much closer to what I am used to as a dry-media artist. I have been working exclusively in pen-and-ink and colored pencil for nearly my whole life, and just really started using paint in 2006. This cell-shading style of getting the paint on the board is much more like I am used to and seems to have me painting much faster.

You may notice a slight change to her wardrobe in the above photo. Once I started adding the tattoos to her arms I really wanted to have some across her chest as well, so I painted over the dark grey tank top she was wearing under the blue and black stripped one. Now she is "Inked in Pink". Time for a background.

Now that I am laying in the background and adding all the special details, this will be the last preview I will show until the opening night of "Outside In". I have to save some surprises for the exhibit!

Skunk Punk progress 2

Day 2 of this painting and I have most of the difficult detail out of the way. Being that this is just an 11"x14" piece, the lettering in those patches almost made my eyes burst.

Skunk Punk in progress 1

Last night I began drawing for this painting which will be one of 20-30 for an upcoming exhibit with Aaron Jasinski at Art Whino. The official press release for the show will be sent out soon, but for now I will posting progress pics of my work as it comes along. John L. Sullivan Prints

The Art Whino gallery in Washington DC held a John L. Sullivan tribute show at their 2011 G40 exhibit and I was asked to create a painting for the show. This is an 11"x17" print of the piece I created for the exhibit. It is called "All-Star Knuckles".

The 2011 G40 exhibit is now underway in Washington, D.C. Art Whino and Vitamin Water have teamed up to present an absolutely huge exhibit with around 30,000 square feet of space and art from around the world. G40 is broken up into different exhibits, each with a specific theme. This year I have a piece in two different G40 exhibits; the Skateboard Art exhibit and the John L. Sullivan exhibit. New Art Whino Website

If you haven't been to ArtWhino.com in a while, now is the perfect time to go check it out. They have just made some major changes and updates, particularly to the 'Available Artwork' section and they have added a 'Store' where you can grab some limited edition artist's vinyl, DIY vinyl, and more.

Now and Then

I recently asked a question on my Twitter page in regards to how often people like to see blog posts. I know that I have little consistency in my posting-regularity and I'm not sure if that's a big deal or not. I've heard that search engines like daily posting, but I'm not writing for search engines. I'm writing for those of you who are interested in what's going on in and around my art and I want to keep you informed at the pace you want. Having said that, please feel free to post your comments about blog-regularity and how often you'd like to see me post.

Some of you may wonder if I'm not doing anything if I'm not blogging or updating Twitter or keeping up with the Facebook page, but the exact opposite is true. Not a day goes by that I don't work on a painting, customize a toy, or at least sketch a little bit. A day without art is like a day without food, and fasting hurts. The main reason I don't blog often is because so much IS going on.

Now to say something relevant in all of this, and get some news posted. I have a few exciting shows coming up in Washington DC, Virginia, and Montana. Currently I have work in The Land Of Odd gallery in Los Angeles, CA. It's a $100 and under group show so if you are in the area you may want to swing by and see if any work is left. They are at 4690 Eagle Rock Blvd - Los Angeles, CA 90041.

My first late-spring-early-summer show (as of now) is on May 7th with the Montana Skatepark Association. This is also a custom skateboard deck exhibit, but these will be auctioned to help raise money for Montana Skateparks. I started skateboarding in the 80's and have always had a passion for the sport, so it's awesome to contribute to the expansion of skate locations and to help keep skateboarding alive and well. I will post about more summer exhibits as they draw near. Also, more info and teasers will be posted in regards to the New York Comic Convention (NYCC) in October 2010. I am making NYCC Exclusive toys, prints, and more. This is all being made possible by Tenacious Toys, as they are hosting me as a guest artist at their booth.

Life Essentials and Art Whino

I am excited to be part of this Art Whino traveling exhibit called 'Life Essentials'. This is the press release from Shane Pamajambo at Art Whino:Art Whino and The International Lifeline Fund (“ILF”) present Life Essentials, a four-city tour that brings together the best Visual and Musical Artists in support of ILF’s ground-breaking humanitarian and environmental projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

The exhibit will feature the works of over 100 artists from across the country and around the globe. The tour will kick off in Washington, D.C. with a two-night event on Thursday and Saturday, September 24 and 26. Following the D.C. launch, the show will hit the road with stops at Art Basel in South Beach on December 5-6, New York City in March, and San Francisco in June.

Thursday, September 24, 2009, will be an invitation-only event featuring live musical performances, a presentation by ILF, and an exclusive sneak preview of the artwork in advance of the official opening of the “Life Essentials” show on Saturday. Guests will be given the opportunity to purchase the artwork and otherwise to support ILF’s vital mission through participation in a silent auction and individual donations. Many celebrities, politicians, ambassadors, and other DC power players are expected to attend. Savory hor’dourves and sweet desserts will be served along with libations.

Saturday, September 26, 2009, will be the official “Life Essentials” art show opening kicking off the four city tour at the Portals Theater in Washington, DC, Art Whino opens this incredible art show and reception party featuring a night of lush entertainment by Ancient Astronauts, ESL music’s newest signed talent from Germany, who will headline the evening with a special performance, setting the mood for this spectacular evening.
