GI Joe Show

GI JOE TRIBUTE SHOW MAY 31 IN NEW JERSEY

SubUrban Toys and Tenacious Toys are teaming up to present a custom toy show based on the recently released GI Joe mini figure platform by The Loyal Subjects. 

These figures are licensed by Hasbro, who have been working with us to offer up a few artists of their own to add to the show, plus lending SubUrban Vinyl a costume or 2 from the GI Joe movie!

There will be 30+ artists contributing about 100 customized GI Joe figures to the show. Additionally, several artists are creating original paintings and prints for the show. There will also be exclusive GI Joe t-shirts by The Loyal Subjects, stickers, grilling outside the shop, appearances by Les Schettkoe (creator of the TLS GI Joe figures), Jonathan Cathey (head of TLS), several Hasbro employees and many of the local artists from the roster. It's going to be an absolute blast- a fitting tribute to the most influential toy line of our generation. Come party with us!

Outside vs Inside. We experience things quite differently depending on if we are observing them or a part of them. Viewing a challenge, such as attending college or approaching an attractive person, can seem like a big, intimidating thing. By the time you are in your 2nd or 3rd year of college or have become good friends with that good looking person, the previously daunting situation no longer feels so menacing.

Further, there are some who find solace in living as outsiders and prefer to rarely engage in socially inclusive circumstances. Punk rockers, anarchists, artists, musicians, scientists, mathematicians, bookworms, and video gamers are just a few examples of chosen lives and identities that comfort those who prefer the outsider lifestyle. This exhibit seeks to tell some of these stories in the whimsical fashion that Aaron Jasinski and Bryan Collins are known for.

Art Whino returns in 2012 for the third edition of G40. Following the mission of G40s past, they will once again bring exposure to lowbrow’s many faces and, as always, present what new facets emerge within this ever growing movement.

Custom Skateboard at Spaghetti Project

At this very moment in Fredericksburg, VA, you can go to Spaghetti Project and check out this custom skateboard in the Deckalicious exhibit. This piece is called 'The Boy Who Ate Green Spaghetti In Space' and was hand painted with acrylics.



Here is a close up of the green spaghetti and the boy's shoe.



I asked Arlene Munoz, the curator of the show and owner of Spaghetti Project, what the theme of the board should be. Her suggestion was spaghetti. The blank deck I had was black, so I opted to leave it that way and loosely go for an outer space scene. My daughter (4 yrs old) wanted to help me paint, so I gave her a few sponges and let her tackle the background. She chose her own colors and I let her paint as much as she wanted. After she was done and the paint was dry, I used a white pencil to draw out the boy and spaghetti. Originally I was laying down colors for the noodles and my wife asked what color the spaghetti was going to be. I said "spaghetti color, I guess", not sure why she would ask such an absurd question. "You? Painting something the color it actually is? Are you okay?" was her general response. I must have been off axis or something because the idea of making the spaghetti an abnormal color hadn't even occurred to me. Green was the first color that came to mind so green it is. It's nice to have a couple of helpers in times of inspirational waffling.

Now and Then

I recently asked a question on my Twitter page in regards to how often people like to see blog posts. I know that I have little consistency in my posting-regularity and I'm not sure if that's a big deal or not. I've heard that search engines like daily posting, but I'm not writing for search engines. I'm writing for those of you who are interested in what's going on in and around my art and I want to keep you informed at the pace you want. Having said that, please feel free to post your comments about blog-regularity and how often you'd like to see me post.

Some of you may wonder if I'm not doing anything if I'm not blogging or updating Twitter or keeping up with the Facebook page, but the exact opposite is true. Not a day goes by that I don't work on a painting, customize a toy, or at least sketch a little bit. A day without art is like a day without food, and fasting hurts. The main reason I don't blog often is because so much IS going on.

Now to say something relevant in all of this, and get some news posted. I have a few exciting shows coming up in Washington DC, Virginia, and Montana. Currently I have work in The Land Of Odd gallery in Los Angeles, CA. It's a $100 and under group show so if you are in the area you may want to swing by and see if any work is left. Next up is "Deckalicious" Skateboard Art Show at Spaghetti Project in Fredericksburg, VA on Saturday, March 20. I will have a hand painted skateboard deck in this group show. My first late-spring-early-summer show (as of now) is on May 7th with the Montana Skatepark Association. This is also a custom skateboard deck exhibit, but these will be auctioned to help raise money for Montana Skateparks. I started skateboarding in the 80's and have always had a passion for the sport, so it's awesome to contribute to the expansion of skate locations and to help keep skateboarding alive and well. I will post about more summer exhibits as they draw near. Also, more info and teasers will be posted in regards to the New York Comic Convention (NYCC) in October 2010. I am making NYCC Exclusive toys, prints, and more. This is all being made possible by Tenacious Toys, as they are hosting me as a guest artist at their booth.

Qee 2 Life

I am pleased to be a part of this group exhibit of custom Qees. It's the first Qee I've painted and also the first time I've exhibited in New York since last year. Even though the Yankees won the world series, I will still be friendly with NY. I promise not to put a Colorado Rockies hat on my Qee.
