2013 Scarecrow Dunnys Now Available

Whether living in my home state of Florida or the absolutely gorgeous state of Colorado (which I miss tremendously), fall will always be a magical season for me. It's only natural then, that my first seasonally themed custom pieces are autumn scarecrows. I've made four of these little guys by sculpting with Magic-Sculp on vinyl Dunny figures and mounting them to wood bases which I painted like fall leaves. They measure just under 4" tall and are being shipped out "blind boxed" so one of the four has a golden ticket with him which gets you a prize pack valued at over $50. You can get all the details at www.bryancollins.etsy.com

Happy Fall!

More Custom Toys 2013

Summer is pretty much coming to an end and it's been a great season of comic conventions, gallery shows, and fun commissioned pieces. Here is a round-up of some of the customs I've done in the past couple of months.

Wall-E custom Android. Resin and acrylic on vinyl. This was a commission, so it's sold.

Incredible Hulk custom Dunny. Acrylic on vinyl. This one is available in my Etsy Shop.

Red Monster custom Android. Acrylic on vinyl. This too was a commission, so it's also sold.

Beauty and the Beast custom Dunny pair. Resin and acrylic on vinyl. These are available individually blind-boxed HERE.

Octobox custom Dunny. Acrylic on vinyl and available in my Etsy Shop.

Cowboy Penguin custom Dunny. Resin and acrylic on vinyl. Another commissioned piece who already has a home.

I have more custom figures in progress as well as a number of illustrations and paintings, so I will get back to working on those and post them up as they are completed. God bless you, and enjoy the remainder of summer!

Work Currently Happening

Everything you see here is currently in progress. This is not to mention the contracted commissions I have NOT yet started, or the children't book I am illustrating. There are also some pieces I'd love to do before Tampa Bay Comic Con in August. Just a heads-up on why I may be taking a while to respond to emails or finish projects. Thanks for your patience and for all of your business. You are all truly appreciated.

Limiting Customs Until October

Summer is upon us and I'm sure you have a few things planned whether it's completing some projects around your home, traveling somewhere special, or just getting in some time to relax. I have some ambitions, conventions, and commitments I will be attacking this summer so in order to make it all happen I am limiting the number of commissioned figures I will accept between now and October 1st.

I have added the last remaining quantities and platforms in the Custom Figures Section of my Etsy Shop so you can order quickly and easily and receive notifications when your completed piece has shipped. If you do not grab one of these before October, you will most likely not see your completed custom until 2014.

This limitation only applies to custom figures. Drawings and paintings are a case-by-case basis. If you have any questions, comment below. Don't forget to follow on Instagram and Twitter for in-progress posts and spontaneous shenanigans. Go get yourself a custom figure!

12 Custom Monster Dunnys

This dozen custom Dunny set was commissioned by one collector who turned me loose on a monster theme. He also sent me three bags of whole bean coffee to help keep me fueled in the creative process. If you would like to talk about a commission for yourself or a friend, send an email to bryancollinsart@gmail.com or check out my SHOP to see what pieces are currently available.

Steampunk Sheriff Dunny

For this commission I was asked to create anything I wanted as long at it was on the Chuckboy Cyborg Dunny platform. I had only worked on this platform once before when I made the seafaring Scuba Dunny. A month ago I beat the PS3 game Rage and have since been wanting to do a steampunk themed custom. When I was striping and priming the Chuckboy cyborg it hit me that this was the perfect platform to take in a steampunk direction. I had a blast creating this little sci-fi western sheriff and hope to do more in this theme soon.

You can order custom Dunny figures at www.bryancollins.etsy.com or email me to discuss something specific - info[at]bryancollinsgallery.com

Aquatic Chuckboy Dunny

There's nothing that warms my heart like when someone receives a piece of work from me and then asks for another. That was the case with this custom Chuckboy Dunny. The collector who commissioned it had previously received his Ocean-Life set of customs. He liked the eye on the octopus Dunny and let me run with that. The above photos show what I came up with after letting my mind journey to the deep for a bit. Hope you like it.

Title: Aquatic Chuckboy Dunny
Artist: Bryan A. Collins (2011)
Medium: Acrylic on 3" vinyl

Beast Buddies Mini Munny

My series of 100 custom Dunnys called Beast Buddies was a surprising success, and randomly packed into the 100 blind-boxes were 16 golden tickets. One of those tickets awarded it's collector with a free custom monster Mini Munny. The ticket was found and the custom Munny you see above was the prize.

My goal with this piece was to give a generally encompassing idea of what the Beast Buddies series was all about. Trying to create one piece that represents 100 pieces was a challenge and essentially impossible, so I focused on creating a multi-eyed monster that would fit in well with the concept that spread throughout the diverse span of customs that were all created as Beast Buddies.

Like all of the Beast Buddies, this pieces was painted with acrylics on vinyl. If you would like to inquire about having a piece commissioned for your collection, please email bryan@bacstudio.com to begin discussing your ideas.

Comments welcomed!

Sea Turtle Dunny in Progress

My last blog post was about a series of aquatic customs I am creating for a collector. Here is the in-progress shot of the sea turtle, and the octopus Dunny in the background. I have started on the lion fish as well, but will save that for the next post. After the lion fish will come the trigger fish and diver, then the 8" whale shark Munny. As always, comments are welcome.

Octopus Dunny in Progress

I am currently working on a series of pieces for a collector, all based on his diving adventures in Thailand. There will be 5 Dunnys: An octopus, a lionfish, trigger fish, sea turtle, and diver. There will also be an 8" Munny customized as a whale shark. The above photo is the work in progress on the octopus. I will try to keep posting updates on the whole collection as I am working on them. As usual, your comments are welcomed. Thanks for checking it out.

Beast Buddies 62 to 73

Above - Starrla, Zimbo, Yuck Yuck, Lemonade

As a few unfinished paintings and drawings lie about the studio, I'm cranking out the last 1/4 of the Beast Buddies series. I've almost reached that magic 100 mark and realized at number 43 that 100 was awfully ambitious. I can say now with a fair amount of confidence that my future custom sets will be much, much smaller in number. Maybe a dozen or so. Furthermore, it may be a while before I release another blind box series since I have tons of 2D pieces swimming around my brain that I really need to get out. That being said, there are still right at 20 Beast Buddies left that can be yours and in that 20 there are four golden tickets. The ticket for the FREE custom monster mini-Munny has not yet been claimed. If you want to own one of the Beast Buddies before the series is sold out, head over to my Etsy Shop.

Above - Creamsicle, Rock Fungus, Sadly, Split Decision

In addition to the Beast Buddies I am working on a few customs for NYCC 2010. The pieces will be offered up by Tenacious Toys at booth #2878 and are being created exclusively for NYCC. They will not be revealed anywhere prior.

A new T-shirt design is in the works and will hopefully be available within the next month or two. I have just 2 smalls and 5 XLs of Living Through Empty if you are interested in them. All sizes are still available in the Coffee Girl shirts, but they are very limited.

Above - Triclops, Booger, Cheese, Three

I really hope to put aside some time soon to do a new video blog. I received a lot of great feedback from the ones up now. Plus, I'm all set up with a digital video camera now so I won't have to shoot them with my webcam. If you want to check out the previous vlog episodes, they are on my YouTube Channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/artbybryancollins.

I really enjoy your comments, so please feel free to post below.

How to Customize a Dunny

Since I have completed about 75 custom toys at this point, I figure I've worked out enough kinks to give a decent tutorial on how to customize a Dunny. This is just my own personal approach to customizing a Dunny, and can be applied to pretty much any vinyl toy on the market.

The very first thing I do is remove all of the original art from the toy with some acetone. Acetone is very potent, and I always do this outdoors. You don't want to be breathing this stuff in. With an old rag I dip a small portion of it into the acetone and wipe the toy down a number of times until just the base vinyl is left. I did not post photos of this step to avoid offending the artist who designed the work for this particular Dunny. You would't want to see your work smeared all over the place, would you?

*Special tip - Make sure you strip all the paint off of the Dunny arms. Sometimes they are slightly sticky and trying to paint over them can be a nightmare and they may remain sticky. Strip them well and you won't have any problems.

Acetone evaporates very quickly, so if you just wait a minute or so the toy is ready for primer. Sometimes I use white primer if I want to use brighter colors on the finished piece, and sometimes I use black if I'm going for the darker look. Any color will accomplish the main goal, which is to help the acrylic paint stick to the vinyl. Priming also provides a consistently colored base to paint on, since a production toy like this one may often have different color head, body, and arms once it's been stripped.

Next, aftet the primer has dried, I use another rag to buff out any roughness or uneven overspray. Little spits and sputters from the aerosol tip will show up when you start painting, so get rid of them now. If you are sculpting on the toy, this step is not so important, but since I am painting directly on the primer, I want it nice and smooth.

I usually like to paint the feet black, even if I use white primer. This is because the feet will be touching some kind of surface at all times when the piece is finished and on display, so the more paint on the feet the better. I choose black because if for some reason the toy is picked up and moved from place to place too often and the feet were to ever sustain any scratches, black will be the least noticeable color if it appears through most surface colors. Does this make sense?

At this point I put down about three to five good layers of base color, which usually consists of two or three different pigments blended together to create a nice custom color that cannot be purchased at your local art store. I don't always do this, because sometimes I find a color so beautiful right out of the tube that I just put it on the way it is, then build my custom colors on top, but for this piece I've used a pink and a purple mixture. Sorry, I won't divulge exactly which ones. You can experiment on your own to find something you like.

This stage can take me an hour or two before I am happy with the color and saturation. Be patient, don't rush. This is art.

*Special tip - If you are using multiple coats of a base color, give the toy plenty of drying time between them so that you don't wipe the paint back off while you are working. Same goes for when you are done and ready to begin painting your details. A standard hair dryer will speed up the process, but don't let the vinyl get too warm or it will become soft.

So far everything I have shown you is pretty standard and most other toy customizers will arrive at this point the same way I do. Now is the time where the road tends to branch off into many routes. Some artists choose to draw directly on the Dunny with pencil or marker to plan out where to go next. Some will just start painting away waiting to see where the piece goes on its own. I take this path sometimes as well. Since this piece is going to be in my Beast Buddies series, it will include the pencil drawing used to plan out the piece, so I have a shot of that below. This will be my road map for this Dunny.

From this drawing I begin with the messy stuff so that the details I add later can be crisp. On this piece I start by spritzing some of the raw purple I used in the base mix onto the Dunny 'ears'. Once the purple is dry, I spritz some pearl satin gold over it. There are a variety of ways to spritz or splatter paint.

*Special tip - Try using an old toothbrush with paint on the tip of slightly damp bristles. Use your thumb to flick the bristles and the paint will spray off nicely.

Now that the messy work is done, I begin adding the features that were planned out on the drawing. In this case, I first lay down the toenails and fingernails. I use a color that will flow well with the gold on the 'ears'. I also map out the eyes with the same raw purple that I sprayed on the ears.

Now I further define the eyes by adding contrast above and below the ball of each eye. Highlighting the top makes the brow appear to be set above the eye in 3D fashion.

*Special tip - Turn the Dunny's head as far around as you need to be able to paint underneath its cheeks and chin. At some point in each of my Dunny customizations I have the head turned a full 180 degrees.

The personality of the Beast Buddies really start to come through in this stage. I add the pupils, some spots on the top of the head, and a little more contrast under the eyes. I couldn't decide between green or blue eyes, so I chose a combo of both. More wrinkles are also added between the eyes.

This guy is called the 'Purple Platypus', so he gets a bill on the part of the Dunny's face that is already a protrusion. The belly has a little lavender on it now, getting ready for a little lighter fuzzy looking cream color. A lot of my Beast Buddies have spots, so this guy has some dark green ones now on his legs and arms.

I like to keep the backs fairly simple. Even though this is a 3D piece of art, the finished product is only viewed from the front when displayed. If I put anything too fancy on the back I am worried that there will be excess temptation to pick it up often and this is not a great idea since the work should be treated like any other hand painted canvas or panel. I gave the little guy a bandana style design on his back and a couple rear toenails and that completes the back side.

Now the bill is sharpened up with nostrils added, the tummy is fuzzy, the eyes are highlighted, and more contrast is added to the brow, and with that, the 'Purple Platypus' is born.

If you would like to grab one of my Beast Buddies for yourself, click over to www.bryancollins.etsy.com and click the custom toy category.

I will try to answer any questions you may have about this tutorial, so please ask them in the comments section below. Hope you enjoyed it.

Bryan

Teddy Troops Space Monster

Space Monster Teddy Troop
Acrylic on 3.5" vinyl toy
SOLD

I just finished up this commissioned 3.5" Teddy Troop. The collector asked for the piece to be done like my Beast Buddies but of course I took it a step further. Since the Teddy Troops are slightly larger than the Dunnys, and the helmet has a lot of workable surface area, I was able to do quite a bit with the details.

Email art@bryandrinkscoffee.com to inquire about commissions.

Tiger Dunny

I know I haven't been blogging very regularly, but it's because I've been super busy painting Beast Buddies, drawing Coffee Girls, and getting ready for Nov 6th's First Friday at The Gallery Underground.

I recently got to make this custom Tiger Dunny for a collector. I also have a commissioned Boston Terrier Dunny and frog Dunny coming up soon.

Here is one of my recent Coffee Girls. She measures 5"x7" colored pencil on illustration board, and she's sold. There are just THREE Coffee Girls left before they will never be made again. The series is closing so message me if you want one of the last three.

Commissions for the Holidays

Summer is almost gone and the crackling of leaves will soon be heard under crisp fall air. Some of you are well aware of the upcoming season, because commissions for holiday gifts are already coming in for Christmas and even Halloween! Many are choosing to give unique and personal gifts this year, rather than heartless clutter. If you are one who is considering giving the gift of original art, and would like me to create something for you, please message me right away. As you know, there is a limited amount of time available between now and the holidays.

Even if you are just curious, it's okay to send me a message with your ideas. There is no commitment to discuss what you have in mind. However, please know that I create work in the order that deposits are made, not the order I receive messages so if you think we need to chat before you made a decision, lets get that ball rolling now!

I look forward to creating for those of you whom I have worked with in the past, and the new folks who I am meeting all the time. Thank you.

Beast Buddies 13 through 16

My series of 100 custom Beast Buddies are going strong. Here's a montage of numbers 13 through 16 and their stories. Get your Beast Buddies at www.bryancollins.bigcartel.com or on Etsy at www.bryancollins.etsy.com while they last.

Clockwise from top left -

Zikka
There is no question as to whether or not the Zikka bird still exists, because we caught one! After we wrestled him from the mouth of a savage python, he told us he is the last of his kind, and our intervention stopped the total annihilation of the species. Once we were safely out of the jungle, the Zikka asked that we take him back with us and find him a place he can live safely and be near a good supply of peanut butter. Apparently the rest of his kind died off from a lack of nutty protein.

Zed Rebra
It is a perilous endeavor, wrangling Beast Buddies, and anything that can make our expeditions go a little smoother we will consider. While trying to track down a guide who wasn't trying to lead us to the remote clans of headhunting tribesmen, or swindling us out of every penny we had is our possession, we crossed paths with a Sherpa who had an interesting array of strange gear-packing companions. He loaned us his red zebra, aka Zed Rebra, and we headed out. Upon our return he told us that Zed had never looked so happy. He told us to keep him, and find him a good home.

Camaroon Goliath
The largest frogs know to mankind are in the Camaroon region of Africa. They are big enough to eat a fawn. It sounded like a great place to hunt for some Beast Buddies. What we were not prepared for was the undiscovered subterranean creature you see here. Lured out with some yummy bacon strips and hot jalapeno-scrambled eggs, this guy was easily caged into a Beast Buddies box and sent to his new home.

Duck Billed Wanderer
After stumbling across the completely unknown Salsa Spiro Beast Buddies in Mexico, we were back on track hunting the Duck Billed Wanderer. The locals told us the best way to find him was to leave a trail of bread crumbs. Not for us to find our way back home (seriously, we have GPS systems, you know) but so that the Wanderer would come across the trail and follow it to us. Upon luring this beast to our camp, he kept us entertained for hours with stories of his travels and silly songs that echoed an influence of Jacob Dillon and the Wallflowers. He lives free, waddling across the globe with no destination, waiting for adventure to find him. If he happens to wander out of your sight, just build a crackling campfire, whip out an acoustic guitar, and use the trick with the bread crumbs. He’ll be whistling his way back sometime.
