Press Start at FNDTN Gallery

The video game fanatic in me has been itching to be part of an art exhibit focused on the same and the time has finally come. I have created two new pieces in the new media-combo I've been pursuing lately. Each piece is colored pencil and acrylic paint on wood and will be debuted by FNDTN Gallery on opening night.

"PRESS START" is a group show featuring artwork by local (Maryland area) and national artists inspired by video games. The show will run from Friday, May 10th, to Saturday, May 25th, with an opening reception for the event on May 10th at 7PM.

New Nautical Illustrations

The Atlantean Relic :: 10"x10" colored pencil on wood

Blow Your Boat :: 5"x7" colored pencil on wood

It's already February and I am releasing these two new nautical illustrations. I started a commitment in October of last year to release new work on the first of each month and I've held fast so far. These pieces remain in the nautical theme I've been exploring, and I've gone both above and below the ocean's surface to broaden the scope of sea-themes.

The work has been made available through www.bryancollins.bigcartel.com until they are sold. If the piece you are looking for is not in the online shop, it has found a home. Feel free to message me with any questions and God bless!

Daily Drawing 29

Working again with this idea and theme that I started on yesterday's daily drawing. I want to see where this goes when I get ready to move these brainstorms to full-blown paintings.

Caffeine Illustration in Progress

It was so much fun sharing the progress of my last painting with you here on the blog I thought I'd do it again with this colored pencil illustration. This piece is one that I am doing for the "Caffeine" exhibit at Rendition. The illustration board I am working on measures 11"x14". I began by drawing out the girl with her to-go cup of coffee, tea, hot cocoa, or whatever. The next phase was writing out a list of coffee-related words and printing them from the computer. The next step was to trace them all with pencil and tracing paper, and do a reverse rubbing on the illustration board so the font would be how I wanted.

Once this tedious part was over I moved on to color. Worried about the light pencil rub fading as I worked, I started by coloring the lettering first. In this photo there is already about 7 hours of color work. This one is going to be a time monster!

Now with the background finished I am able to move on to working with the main form in the piece which is the girl holding her to-go cup of coffee. This is where the artistic challenge comes in. Since the background is so colorful, I have to make sure that she does not get washed into a psychedelic ocean of confusion. I have a color scheme planned out for her, but I won't mention it here because I want the freedom to adapt or manipulate the plan if the piece needs me to do so.

Now the roses in her hair are finished, and the hair is getting all colored up. I'm down to crunch-time now and this piece really needs to be finished today, which means all the unfinished work you see here needs to be completed in one sitting. That will probably be about 10-12 hours of work. I better get back to it.

Here is the poster for the "Caffeine" exhibit at Rendition Gallery -

I will update this same post with more progress soon. Stay tuned.

God bless,
Bryan

Her Tears Are Stars

It's been a crazy few weeks with the Albuquerque Comic Expo, still getting settled in to our new house, painting live in downtown Fort Collins every weekend for Streetmosphere, and working on commissions. I know it may seem weird to take a break from art by making more art, but sometimes that's exactly what I do. Every once in a while I need to do something that is just for the sake of making art, and that's what this piece is.

I call this one "Her Tears Are Stars" and it is 5"x7" colored pencil on illustration board. It's been a while since I've made anything in the psychedelic style, so that was really the only theme I had in mind.

There is more information about this piece HERE.

Thoughts and comments welcomed.

God bless,

Pine Squares Project

Now that we are getting settled in to our new house, a few home improvement projects are starting to take place. The first major upgrade to our house was cutting out a window and turning it into a door. My father and I tackled the endeavor in order to have easy access to the back yard. Once the door was in and trimmed, I had two long pieces of pine left over. One piece was about ten-feet long and one about eight-feet long. Rather than taking them to the landfill I decided to cut them up and turn them into art.

The first project for the upcycled wood is a set of four paintings that measure 3.5"x3.5" square. I cut the squares and sanded each one by hand to smooth out the edges and corners. Afterward, each piece got two coats of gesso. They are now sitting in my studio to dry for the next 24 hours. Stay tuned for more.

God bless,
Bryan A. Collins

Untitled Pencil Drawing

After working on commissioned pieces throughout the day, I sometimes take a drawing board into the living room in the evenings. You see, I'm one of those people who has a lot of trouble just sitting and watching TV. If I'm not doing something with my hands I will fidget. While my wife is watching a program usually consisting of singing, dancing, or house hunting, I with tool away on a drawing so we can still chat but I won't go crazy staring at the plasma. The drawing you see here is one that was created in the way I have described above.

I have matted this 5"x7" pencil drawing to fit an 8"x10" frame. If you would like to add this piece to your collection, please see more photos and the official description on ETSY.

As always, please feel free to comment below, and God bless.

Six Originals UNDER $100

As some of you know, artists usually see about half of what a piece of art sells for in a gallery. On top of that, if the artist pays for a frame or matting, that comes out of his or her 50%. So, since I received the 6 pieces of work back from the gallery that had them, I am offering them at LESS THAN HALF PRICE of what they were at the gallery.

Please don't misunderstand me, I am not taking a stab at any art galleries. I love the galleries that represent my work but when I get something back I think YOU should reap the benefits!

Each of these pieces is priced at just $95. They are unframed so you can choose a 5"x7" frame in your own taste, or mat them to fit something larger.

TO PURCHASE - Just send me a message with the title of the piece(s) you want and be sure to include your email in the message. I will send you a Paypal invoice (which you can pay by credit card even if you don't have a Paypal account) and I will mail the piece to you via USPS 2-3 day Priority mail immediately. Otherwise, you can go to www.bryancollins.etsy.com and make your purchase there.

Bowling for...customs? How 'bout a 7-10 Split

For the bowlers out there. I was looking at this 3″ vinyl Dunny, brainstorming some ideas and themes, and it occurred to me how much the extensions from its head looked like they could be bowling pins. Then I realized how the head could look like a warped bowling ball, and being a bowler, I thought it would be great to give a tribute to the infamous 7-10 split.

This custom Dunny is hand painted with acrylics (including some glittered and iridescent pearls), and heavily cleared with three smooth coats. If you want this Dunny in your collection, check it out at www.bryandrinkscoffee.com under SHOP. Just $55+shipping.

Proof of Faith Manifests in City of Hope

As an estimated 4 million people gather together in Washington DC to share in dreams of a better nation and a better world, Bryan Collins reveals his "Proof of Faith" exhibit at the Art Whino gallery in National Harbor, Maryland. The nearly 60 piece show opens January 24th, 2009 from 6pm-midnight, and offers a glimpse into the struggles and inadequacies faced by every human being on the planet. Even when dealing with topics of death, heartbreak, physical insecurity, fear, and addiction, Bryan maintains his whimsical and vibrant style to show the hope of redemption from these situations.

Originally slated to create 60 paintings for this exhibit, Collins decided to stretch the span of media he uses and opted to include not just his acrylic paintings, but colored pencil illustrations, scratch board, pen-and-ink, custom vinyl toys, and even graphite sketches. Most of Bryan's work begins with pencil drawings which are then transferred to another substrate such as panel, canvas, or illustration board. By including some of these preliminary drawings in the exhibit, he reaches for a goal of more intimacy with the viewers, fans, and collectors of his work. These drawings establish more understanding into the processes of Collins creations.

"Proof of Faith" is Bryan Collins' 30th show in just two years. He has been blessed with numerous magazine features, blog reviews, website showcases, newspaper articles, and group exhibits all around the globe. Collector Alert! - This is Bryan's first major gallery solo show and will certainly prove to be a springboard for many more. No piece in this exhibit is larger than 32 inches, and none are priced over $1,000 making it well within the range of even a moderate collector to own a piece his work.

The exhibit runs through February 15th. More more information, please contact:
