Custom Raffy Available

"Sparkle Stripe" is the first piece I've created on the Kidrobot Raffy platform. It was made for a custom toy exhibit at the Jarvis Rockwell Gallery in North Adams, MA. Part baby giraffe, part psychedelic pony, this whimsical beast is painted with metallic and pearl acrylics and measures approximately 4.5"x5".

Beast Buddies Mini Munny

My series of 100 custom Dunnys called Beast Buddies was a surprising success, and randomly packed into the 100 blind-boxes were 16 golden tickets. One of those tickets awarded it's collector with a free custom monster Mini Munny. The ticket was found and the custom Munny you see above was the prize.

My goal with this piece was to give a generally encompassing idea of what the Beast Buddies series was all about. Trying to create one piece that represents 100 pieces was a challenge and essentially impossible, so I focused on creating a multi-eyed monster that would fit in well with the concept that spread throughout the diverse span of customs that were all created as Beast Buddies.

Toy2R Mini Qee Release

The good folks at Toy2R are getting ready to release a new DIY vinyl toy that is a mini version of their staple Qees. Tenacious Toys was in charge of putting together an artist line-up to have some of these pieces fully customized before the release. I was added to that roster, and created the piece you see in the teaser photo below. Monster Jamungo B.U.D.

For the second year I am participating in the Squad 19 - Toys In The Attic fundraiser for Toys For Tots. This year, Squad 19 gave twelve artists a 9" Jamungo B.U.D. for customizing. This montage of monster elements is what I did with mine.



The customs will be shown at Gallery 122 in Minneapolis, MN on Friday December 3rd. During the exhibit you will be able to bid on the customs and view them in person. But it gets better! If you can't make it to Gallery 122, you can still place your bids on ebay the week prior to the exhibit. Make sure you are on my email list (sign up at the top right of this blog) to be notified when the auction goes live.

Toys in the Attic 2010 will take place @ GALLERY 122 this year. Gallery 122 is located @ 122 8th Street SE in Minneapolis

Opening Reception will be December 3th and will feature limited edition/signed and numbered prints and custom toys from Local and National artists benefiting Toys for Tots.

Guests are asked to help out children in need by bringing a new (unwrapped) toy* to the show. In return, you’ll get one** of the event official poster prints designed this year by Minneapolis artist DWITT.

*No military based toys such as guns, please / **While supplies last.

If you forget your toy, there is a suggested donation of $1-$5 at the door. All toys and door donations go directly to Toys for Tots.

The Art
Artists are invited to create a limited edition of toy-inspired art prints for sale at the event – each print is numbered and signed. Additionally, custom toy artists will be creating pieces that will be available via Ebay auctions ending the night of the opening (details to come).

Sea Turtle Dunny in Progress

My last blog post was about a series of aquatic customs I am creating for a collector. Here is the in-progress shot of the sea turtle, and the octopus Dunny in the background. I have started on the lion fish as well, but will save that for the next post. After the lion fish will come the trigger fish and diver, then the 8" whale shark Munny. Beast Buddies 62 to 73

As a few unfinished paintings and drawings lie about the studio, I'm cranking out the last 1/4 of the Beast Buddies series. I've almost reached that magic 100 mark and realized at number 43 that 100 was awfully ambitious. I can say now with a fair amount of confidence that my future custom sets will be much, much smaller in number. Maybe a dozen or so. Furthermore, it may be a while before I release another blind box series since I have tons of 2D pieces swimming around my brain that I really need to get out. That being said, there are still right at 20 Beast Buddies left that can be yours and in that 20 there are four golden tickets. The ticket for the FREE custom monster mini-Munny has not yet been claimed. If you want to own one of the Beast Buddies before the series is sold out, head over to my Etsy Shop.

In addition to the Beast Buddies I am working on a few customs for NYCC 2010. The pieces will be offered up by Tenacious Toys at booth #2878 and are being created exclusively for NYCC. They will not be revealed anywhere prior.

A new T-shirt design is in the works and will hopefully be available within the next month or two. I have just 2 smalls and 5 XLs of Living Through Empty if you are interested in them. All sizes are still available in the Coffee Girl shirts, but they are very limited.

I just finished up this commissioned 3.5" Teddy Troop. The collector asked for the piece to be done like my Beast Buddies but of course I took it a step further. Since the Teddy Troops are slightly larger than the Dunnys, and the helmet has a lot of workable surface area, I was able to do quite a bit with the details.

Zikka
There is no question as to whether or not the Zikka bird still exists, because we caught one! After we wrestled him from the mouth of a savage python, he told us he is the last of his kind, and our intervention stopped the total annihilation of the species. Once we were safely out of the jungle, the Zikka asked that we take him back with us and find him a place he can live safely and be near a good supply of peanut butter. Apparently the rest of his kind died off from a lack of nutty protein.

Zed Rebra
It is a perilous endeavor, wrangling Beast Buddies, and anything that can make our expeditions go a little smoother we will consider. While trying to track down a guide who wasn't trying to lead us to the remote clans of headhunting tribesmen, or swindling us out of every penny we had is our possession, we crossed paths with a Sherpa who had an interesting array of strange gear-packing companions. He loaned us his red zebra, aka Zed Rebra, and we headed out. Upon our return he told us that Zed had never looked so happy. He told us to keep him, and find him a good home.

Camaroon Goliath
The largest frogs know to mankind are in the Camaroon region of Africa. They are big enough to eat a fawn. It sounded like a great place to hunt for some Beast Buddies. What we were not prepared for was the undiscovered subterranean creature you see here. Lured out with some yummy bacon strips and hot jalapeno-scrambled eggs, this guy was easily caged into a Beast Buddies box and sent to his new home.

Duck Billed Wanderer
After stumbling across the completely unknown Salsa Spiro Beast Buddies in Mexico, we were back on track hunting the Duck Billed Wanderer. The locals told us the best way to find him was to leave a trail of bread crumbs. Not for us to find our way back home (seriously, we have GPS systems, you know) but so that the Wanderer would come across the trail and follow it to us. Upon luring this beast to our camp, he kept us entertained for hours with stories of his travels and silly songs that echoed an influence of Jacob Dillon and the Wallflowers. He lives free, waddling across the globe with no destination, waiting for adventure to find him. If he happens to wander out of your sight, just build a crackling campfire, whip out an acoustic guitar, and use the trick with the bread crumbs. He’ll be whistling his way back sometime.

Beast Buddies 5-8

These are the second set of 4 Beast Buddies. Clockwise from top left they are "Crete", "Mongolia", "Everglade", and "Larva". Each one measures 3" tall and was painted with acrylics. A couple of them have an acrylic gem attached to his/her head. Each of these little guys has already found a home, but I am making 100 Beast Buddies total so you still have time to adopt some of your own.

Beast Buddies are my series of 100 custom Dunny figurines. When you adopt Beast Buddies, they come to you neatly contained in a blind box. If you are unfamiliar with blind boxes, they are a mysterious way of packaging designer toys in which there may be need to conceal a prize. You don't know which toy you will get or if you will get a prize. Coldest Dunny in the world!

This is a sketch for a custom 3" Dunny that I just completed, but I won't post pics of the painted piece until the collector receives it in the mail. Why is it the coldest in the world? Well, since this Dunny is #2 in my series of Beast Buddies, he needed to be named after a region or place. I painted him in glacier blue, so I did some quick research to find the coldest mountain in the world, which is Vinson Massif in Antarctica. Named after the mountain, this is the coldest Dunny in the world.

Beast Buddies are here!

It took an entire team of monster hunters to wrangle these little guys and get them packed into their boxes, but it's finally done! While dressing our wounds we discovered these little guys can guzzle an entire cup of coffee in one sip if you look away, so guard yours with care.

Inside each box you will find a 3" custom vinyl Dunny, hand painted with acrylics and clear coated with a glossy shine. You also get the original pencil drawing concept used to plan out your Beast Buddies (includes the name of your Buddy), and a bryandrinkscoffee.com sticker. Each one of my Beast Buddies is an original and is a mystery until you open it. Hunt down as many as you like!



Why are Beast Buddies mysteriously packaged like this? One reason is that we don't know which ones we will come across on our hunts. They are elusive little monsters! Another reason is that once they are captured, we can't risk them getting loose, so the box gets sealed right away. The third reason is that surprises and just so much fun.



*PLEASE NOTE - The Dunny you see in the photos is just an example of Beast Buddies. That little guy is named "Appalachia" and he has already found a home. Bowling for...customs? How 'bout a 7-10 Split

For the bowlers out there. I was looking at this 3″ vinyl Dunny, brainstorming some ideas and themes, and it occurred to me how much the extensions from its head looked like they could be bowling pins. Then I realized how the head could look like a warped bowling ball, and being a bowler, I thought it would be great to give a tribute to the infamous 7-10 split.
