Monster Tea Cup

Custom Monster Tea Mini Figure
Fresh off the Lunartik Mini Tea Tour! This is the piece I sent to Matt Jones (aka Lunartik) for the European Mini Tea Tour. This little guy made his way around London, Berlin, Vienna, Glasgow, and more. He stands about 2.25" tall and is painted with acrylics. If you would like to add this well-traveled little monster to your collection, he is currently available in my Etsy Shop.

12 Custom Monster Dunnys

This dozen custom Dunny set was commissioned by one collector who turned me loose on a monster theme. He also sent me three bags of whole bean coffee to help keep me fueled in the creative process. If you would like to talk about a commission for yourself or a friend, send an email to bryancollinsart@gmail.com or check out my SHOP to see what pieces are currently available.

These are my first custom KR Bots and are painted with acrylics. The series is comprised of "team old" from the first KR Mascot series (Good vs Evil), and "team new" who are joining in for this second series of customs. Bots are blind-boxed when you order, but you may choose if you want a pull from team old or team new. If you want a shot at one of the three above, grab from team new. All the possibilities of custom bots are sampled at http://www.battleofthemascots.bigcartel.com/

No More Custom Toys (sort of)

I've been thinking for a long time about all of the comments, questions, and suggestions I regularly receive from fellow artists, fans, and gallery curators. After chewing on a great deal of information I began to feel that I needed to abandon either my fine art or my toy art. Although they are both forms of art, the genres carry different vibes and often attract the adoration of different people. I know that a great number of people who like my custom toys really aren't much into my paintings and illustrations. On the other side, most of the collectors whom I've worked with for years just don't connect with the custom toy realm.

(Toy Art) "Qee to the Moon" :: acrylic on 4" tall Mini Qee

(Fine Art) "Play Some Purple For Me" :: 16"x20" acrylic on linen

After putting both the fine art and toy customizing worlds on the chopping block, I felt a little like Abraham with the knife hovering in my hands over Issac, hating what I felt I had to do but willing to do it anyway. Then, like the angel that provided Abraham with another sacrifice, I had a vision of one river that flows to a fork where it parts ways with itself. The one river then has two different names but both are fed from the same source. This gave me the notion that it is time to divide my arts, rather than kill one.

Now you will have a choice to follow what I am doing with paintings and illustrations or with custom toys, or both. Those of you who only want to see my 2D and fine art work may continue to follow me here and you will no longer see posts regarding my custom toys. Those of you wishing to follow my toy customizing adventures will need to jump over to www.facebook.com/colorchemist3d where I am now working under the name Color Chemist. You may also want to follow on Twitter at @ColorChemist3D where I will be posting links to news, shows, and custom toy photos.

Thank you all, both friends of my 2D and 3D art, for the encouragement and support. I love both realms of work and I am excited to continue each by traveling both rivers!

God bless,
Bryan A. Collins (a.k.a. Color Chemist)

2011 Prophetic Assumptions

New Years' resolutions tend to be a prelude to disappointment for most folks. We come up with a list of goals, many of them too grandiose to ever achieve, then by mid to late January we are depressed and wallowing in our failure and hoping that the next year will get here soon so we can start over. I'm going to skip that.

Instead I am just going to make some prophetic assumptions of what 2011 will bring forth in me and my work. I add assumptions after the word prophetic because if they don't come true I will be labeled a false prophet and there were times in which people were killed for holding that label.

Now, even though I just took a shot at list making, I will still make one here but again we will remember these are not resolutions. These are projects that are either already in motion or are likely to happen during the course of 2011. If they do not manifest, you are free to give me a hard time about them but I will be exempt from public hanging or being stoned to death because prophetic assumptions are not prophesies per se.

1) Finish the "Proof of Faith" book - I began putting together a book mid 2009 and many projects and life circumstances kept pushing it to the back burner. It is to the point now that I have scrapped the whole thing and will be starting again from scratch. The book will be a collection of select works from 2006 to 2010 and will also feature a few pieces from my teenage years. I am writing about the inspiration behind certain paintings and illustrations, as well as telling the story of the journey that brought me to art as a career and an obsession.

The book will be released through Blurb and available two ways. You can get it as a print-on-demand, meaning you order one through Blurb and they will print and mail it to you. Or, I will have copies at my studio which will be signed and come with an exclusive limited edition print. These will be available in my Etsy shop and at BigCartel and can be personalized if you wish.

2) Make more (and BIGGER) paintings and drawings - The bulk of 2010 was entirely consumed by the series of 100 Beast Buddies which recently sold out. Due to this enormous project, I had little time to work on 2D pieces. I have a few paintings that were begun more than a year ago which I intend to finish and I have many new pieces swimming around in my head that need to get born (all babies want to get born).

Furthermore, up to this point, 24"x36" is the largest painting I have ever created. I want to move beyond and create my largest work-to-date. I intend to at least begin this piece this year. I have not settled on an exact size, just larger than 24"x36".

3) Set up a new permanent studio - My wife and I are in the process of buying a house and when this happens, I will be setting up a permanent studio. From there I plan to do some live painting from my Stickam broadcast channel. You can sign up and friend me on Stickam and when I am broadcasting you can tune in and out and check in on paintings and drawings in progress.

Once settled in to the new studio, I hope to get back into occasionally posting video blogs on my Youtube channel. Some fast-motion drawing sequence videos are going to be made as well. With these I will film drawings being created from start to finish, then post a video of the entire process shown in fast motion. That should be fun.

4) Release new sets of customs - With the Beast Buddies finished, I will be releasing new smaller sets and individual custom pieces. Some will be Dunnys but I plan to create on more Teddy Troops, Munny and mini-Munny, and some works already in progress including a Giver, a Muscamoot, and a Bambaboss. I will be going much lighter on the customs for 2011 as I give time to the 2D projects mentioned above so I am not sure when these projects will be finished. Having said this, if you would like a custom toy created specifically for you please email bryan@bacstudio.com to chat with me about it.

I'm sure that I could add about 96 more endeavors to this list but I won't. These are the projects I wish to share at this time. There are a couple of other adventures I really want to mention but I have been sworn to secrecy and cannot confirm or deny any information about these clandestine operations at this time. I will leave you with that and may your 2011 be blessed and pure.

Monster Jamungo B.U.D.

For the second year I am participating in the Squad 19 - Toys In The Attic fundraiser for Toys For Tots. This year, Squad 19 gave twelve artists a 9" Jamungo B.U.D. for customizing. This montage of monster elements is what I did with mine.

The customs will be shown at Gallery 122 in Minneapolis, MN on Friday December 3rd. During the exhibit you will be able to bid on the customs and view them in person. But it gets better! If you can't make it to Gallery 122, you can still place your bids on ebay the week prior to the exhibit. Make sure you are on my email list (sign up at the top right of this blog) to be notified when the auction goes live.

The artist roster for customs is:

Brock Davis | itistheworldthatmadeyousmall.com
Jason Goad | ingoadwetrust.com
DC Ice | dcice.com
Frank Kozik | fkozik.com

*No military based toys such as guns, please / **While supplies last.

If you forget your toy, there is a suggested donation of $1-$5 at the door. All toys and door donations go directly to Toys for Tots.

The Art

Sea Turtle Dunny in Progress

My last blog post was about a series of aquatic customs I am creating for a collector. Here is the in-progress shot of the sea turtle, and the octopus Dunny in the background. I have started on the lion fish as well, but will save that for the next post. After the lion fish will come the trigger fish and diver, then the 8" whale shark Munny. As always, comments are welcome.

God bless,
Bryan

Octopus Dunny in Progress

I am currently working on a series of pieces for a collector, all based on his diving adventures in Thailand. There will be 5 Dunnys: An octopus, a lionfish, trigger fish, sea turtle, and diver. There will also be an 8" Munny customized as a whale shark. The above photo is the work in progress on the octopus. I will try to keep posting updates on the whole collection as I am working on them. As usual, your comments are welcomed. Thanks for checking it out.

God bless,
Bryan

Beast Buddies 62 to 73

Above - Starrla, Zimbo, Yuck Yuck, Lemonade

As a few unfinished paintings and drawings lie about the studio, I'm cranking out the last 1/4 of the Beast Buddies series. I've almost reached that magic 100 mark and realized at number 43 that 100 was awfully ambitious. I can say now with a fair amount of confidence that my future custom sets will be much, much smaller in number. Maybe a dozen or so. Furthermore, it may be a while before I release another blind box series since I have tons of 2D pieces swimming around my brain that I really need to get out. That being said, there are still right at 20 Beast Buddies left that can be yours and in that 20 there are four golden tickets. The ticket for the FREE custom monster mini-Munny has not yet been claimed. If you want to own one of the Beast Buddies before the series is sold out, head over to my Etsy Shop.

Above - Creamsicle, Rock Fungus, Sadly, Split Decision

In addition to the Beast Buddies I am working on a few customs for NYCC 2010. The pieces will be offered up by Tenacious Toys at booth #2878 and are being created exclusively for NYCC. They will not be revealed anywhere prior.

A new T-shirt design is in the works and will hopefully be available within the next month or two. I have just 2 smalls and 5 XLs of Living Through Empty if you are interested in them. All sizes are still available in the Coffee Girl shirts, but they are very limited.

Above - Triclops, Booger, Cheese, Three

I really hope to put aside some time soon to do a new video blog. I received a lot of great feedback from the ones up now. Plus, I'm all set up with a digital video camera now so I won't have to shoot them with my webcam. If you want to check out the previous vlog episodes, they are on my YouTube Channel at http://www.youtube.com/user/artbybryancollins.

I really enjoy your comments, so please feel free to post below.

Custom Marshall Teaser

It has been a few months since I finished this custom Marshall for the Tenacious Toys Blind Box Series about to be released any day now. Since the piece I created for the series is a mystery chase custom, I can't show you the whole thing here because that would just ruin the surprise. If you want to take a crack at getting this one-off hand painted monster Marshall, you can check over at www,tenacioustoys.com and pick up a blind box when they are released. You might score this one, or one of the others from the great roster of participants. The other artists contributing to this set of customs are Nemo, OsirisOrion, Leecifer, Steve Talkowski, Mr. Den, Spanky Stokes, LYSOL, Brent Nolasco, ZAM, Rolo, Ian Ziobrowski, and Phetus. A full reveal of my custom piece will be released later, but for now, this is all I can give.
