Black Widow Spider Drawing

I've never been afraid of spiders, but I realize how many people can be. Some of that fear could be innate, but I believe most of it stems from a lack of information. Makers of movies and television, creators of Halloween décor, and general mythology form our fears of arachnids. Some spiders do pose serious threats, but most are truly harmless and, moreover, extremely beneficial to the world as a whole.

Did you know, for example, that male Black Widow Spiders carry no toxins, and that bites from the female are rarely fatal? Sure, you still don't want one to bite you, but just staying away from these creatures is enough. They won't chase you down and attack you.

Black House Spider Ink Drawing

In the continuing preparation for this year's National Reptile Breeders' Expo in Daytona, Florida, I've created this Black House Spider drawing. The original work is 4"x6" ink on paper, and is available now. I'm not requiring anyone to wait for the show in August, because if the originals for this show sell out online, I will offer prints of them at the Expo. The requirement of this show state that the only art allowed must feature reptiles, arachnids, and amphibians (it's really a reptile convention), so I'm stocking up as fast as I can. There are some original works that I'm saving to reveal at the Expo, but this Black House Spider is ready for a home today. Check it out HERE.

Bowser Just Added on Etsy

Keeping with my current enormous task of getting more prints to you through my Etsy shop, today I have added Bowser. These 100% cotton prints look so much like the original, they could get confused side by side. The original work was made with ink and watercolor on mixed media paper so these textured prints made with archival ink are some of the highest quality reproductions I've ever made. If you like him, head over to www.bryancollins.etsy.com to grab one for yourself.

Davy Jones Prints Now Available

It's been a while since I created this pen and ink drawing of the Pirates of the Caribbean character, Davy Jones. This was a commission during the 2017 July Art Challenge where I attempted to create a commission once per day for the entire month. I ended up doing 33 pieces in 31 days. Until now, this print was only available at shows from me in person. Now they are available in my Etsy shop at www.bryancollins.etsy.com so you can have one shipped right to your door. These are my highest quality prints made on 100% cotton, acid free, archival textured museum paper with equally archival ink. Grab one HERE.

Weathered Sailor Archival Prints

The Weathered Sailor is an ink drawing that was created as part of the Shore Lore Apparel project on Kickstarter. One hundred shirts and hoodies were made with this artwork on them, and a portion of each sale was donated to the Sea Turtle Hospital at Whitney Lab here in Florida. They completely sold out and now the art is available on beautifully textured, 100% cotton, archival prints. These are gorgeous reproductions with so much detail they are nearly indistinguishable from the original. I am hand signing each print before they ship to ensure that you are getting my highest quality print. Since I am creating these in-studio with my new wide format professional printer, I can keep the cost insanely low and offer these to you for just $35 plus shipping. You won't find a better print at a better price.

Surfer Mickey

Surfer Mickey

It has been many years since I first moved to Florida. Since then I have moved away and come back about a half-dozen times. Wherever I go, when people hear I am from Florida, they ask about Disney. It seems that Mickey Mouse is the unofficial mascot for our state. It's no wonder then that I get asked all the time why I haven't drawn Mickey. The number one glaring reason it that Mickey IS such an iconic character that to begin, you are putting a target on yourself for copyright action. I'll be honest here; I do get approached from time to time by copyright lawyers regarding some of the art I create. So far it has never amounted to more than requests not to use certain keywords, search terms, or to not offer the image on print-on-demand royalty sites. I always comply.

The second reason is that the simpler the design, the greater room for error. Nailing a character like Mickey is tough. Every line and shape has to be exactly where it needs to be, or you should just do a figurative interpretation to avoid scrutiny. I decided to go for a version of Mickey that has the look and feel of his origins. The early black and white Mickey cartoons took the mouse through a few developmental changes, particularly in the length of his nose. Since Mickey spends all of his time in Florida and California, I just thought it was appropriate for him to take a little time to catch some waves when he can.

I used Strathmore mixed media paper here and started out with a pencil sketch that was changed many times. After landing something I liked, I used Pigma Micron pens to take car of the outline and a Pigma Micron marker to fill in the large black areas. The final step was to paint the watercolor with Winsor and Newton paints.

July Challenge 11, 12, 13

Dick Tracy

Challenges are one of the driving forces behind every artist. Whether it's mastering the medium, developing a new technique, or just meeting deadlines, the hurdles give us a reason to push forward in the race. This July Art Challenge pushed my boundaries by forcing me to draw characters I would have never drawn on my own. What pushes you? What challenges are you facing? What are you doing to overcome them?

Each of these 5"x7" drawings was created with Pigma Micron pens and watercolor on Strathmore mixed media paper. Each is sold.

At the end of June I presented a challenge: Offer a different theme each week in July where you can request a 5"x7" black and white original piece by telling me one word in that theme. Week 2 - Comic Books
Week 3 - Video Games
Week 4 - Disney

Here is the first piece from the challenge. Stay tuned for the rest.

Panda Oar Fisherman

Panda Oar Fisherman

I set out to draw a panda. Just a simple panda. I placed a hat on his head because I thought it would help him feel more civilized. Before we knew it, he had asked for an oar because he wanted to start a commercial fishing business and was ready to follow the tide.

This original 5"x7" ink and watercolor piece has been listed at www.useeverycolor.com

Chin Up Ink Drawing

This is the first piece I tried to tackle after picking up a set of Sakura Pigma Micron Pens and I put it aside for a while, knowing that once I had more practice with the pens I'd want to go back and work on it again. She's complete now and I am hooked on these pens. The tips don't clog or dry out like some other pens I've used, and the ink is archival and very black. Even the 005 size is consistently smooth.

Anchored Heart Shirts

The "Anchored Heart" tees are about to start shipping and I am giving away the original blue-pencil sketch used to create this design to one person who orders the shirt before Feb 28th. The shirts are printed on light heather grey cotton/polyester blend unisex tees and are just $15 until Feb 28. They will be $18 thereafter. These are very limited edition shirts with only 100 total being made, so sizes are limited to about 20 or so each. Don't delay, order today - www.bryancollins.bigcartel.com
