New Daily Sketch Blog

I was inspired by my friend and studio mate, Oscar Woodruff, to start a daily sketch blog. Even though I paint or draw every day already, I tend to get caught up in the work-side of art and don't put aside enough time to just draw for the sake of drawing. This new daily sketch blog will provide the incentive to keep that going. Check it out at www.astheysleep.blogspot.com and sign up for updates.

Fiona February

The first of the last 12 Coffee Girls is complete and in the hands of her new owner. To recap what I am doing: I have decided it is time to bring the Coffee Girls series to a close. I will be making one new Coffee Girl each month for the rest of the year, with the last piece being completed in January 2010. Each is 5"x7" and like always, Prismacolor pencil on illustration board. Then, a final colossal Coffee Girl will be created in an 18"x24" to say goodbye to the collection of more than two dozen pieces. By closing the series I will help perpetuate a rise in value for those loyal collectors who have been purchasing these pieces. If you want one of the last 8 available pieces, or the final colossus piece, please message me at art@bryandrinkscoffee.com to make your reservation.

work in progress II

Day three on this new painting. This photo shows about 4 hours of work since the last photo. Basically I began darkening and lightening various areas so I can begin to see where my contrasts need to be and what colors will help bring them out. I chose to only work on the old turtle man first and not do anything to the girl on the right. I find that when I have too much partially finished work on the same piece, I have a hard time concentrating on any certain area. My eyes are all over the painting and I get overwhelmed trying to focus on what needs to get done. I will continue working the turtle until I am fairly clear on how he will look when finished, then I will work on the girl, occasionally going back to the turtle to compliment how the girl begins to turn out, then back to the girl. I want both characters to work with each other, of course, in regards to lighting, colors, and textures (illusions of texture, not actual). I will be working on this piece tomorrow night at the open house at Gallery Underground in Ft Collins, CO. Come by from 5-9 to watch, if you want.

work in progress I

I just started this painting yesterday (March 17th) and decided to post it as a step-by-step work in progress just for kicks.

I started out with a 16"x20" piece of hardboard panel I picked up at Jerry's Artarama, which is about two blocks from my downtown studio in Fort Collins, CO.

I began by applying two coats of gesso to take the slickness off the panel. I stared at the panel for about 10 minutes, a common way I start a new piece of work, then decided to throw down some oranges, pale pinks, and yellow ochre. At that point, I still had no clear vision of what I wanted for a subject, so I just kept painting the background for hours, day dreaming in the process. Today I went back in and worked on the background some more, to hush some of the oranges that were too bright, then started pencil sketching the characters in the foreground. The last hour or so was spent putting a little green and black in the area that will become a tortoise shell. That's it for now.

$1 Original Robot Drawing on Myspace

$1 ORIGINAL drawing and signed print auction going on at my Myspace blog.

This is a new Myspace blog auction for the original drawing, "Alpha Seven", and a 5"x7" signed print of the finished painting. This drawing measures approximately 10.25"x13.25" and was made with graphite on archival, acid-free drawing paper. Due to the strange size of this drawing, I will personally mat it to 16"x20" if you want. This will be a $15 addition to the winning bid if you want it done. A frame shop will charge quite a bit more. I will mat it in black unless you prefer another color.

This drawing was too big for my scanner, so the graphite reflected the lighting a bit when I took the photo. The drawing itself is darker than you see in the photo. It's nice, I promise

Bidding starts at just $1. To bid, enter your comment in my Myspace Blog with the amount of your bid. To outbid the person above you, please make your bid at least $1 higher. Winning bidder agrees to pay $4.00 shipping, and complete payment within 5 days of the auction's end. Paypal or money orders are accepted. Please message me if you have
any questions.

Bidding ends Wednesday, March 18th at 9pm mountain time (11pm east coast, 8pm west coast). Have fun bidding!
